Tower of London

Kathie loves exploring dungeons and the best dungeons in England are under the Bloody Tower, one of the 22 towers making up the Tower of London. Some of the flooring has been dug up and scratched into the under surface of a paving slab they find a faint coded message.

Rosie thinks it could have been made by Sir John Barstead. He was imprisoned and executed at the Tower by King Charles the 2nd after the king returned from exile in 1660. Sir John had signed the King's father's death warrant eleven years earlier. But before he was arrested, it was reported at the time that Sir John buried a butter barrel full of gold bars, possibly in the Tower grounds. Many attempts have been made to find it. Samuel Pepys, the famous diary-writer of that era, tried and failed. No one has gotten their hands on that gold . . . yet . . . (ISBN 9781905996179, 158 pages, 13 illustrations)
